Ring

1850-1870
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Rings were not as significant an element of jewellery in the Balkans in the 19th century as they are today. The most popular pieces were head ornaments and waist clasps, and rings were rarely included in the prescribed dowry jewellery.

This ring could have been worn by a man or a woman. The eagle on the bezel was a popular design throughout the region.

It was bought for seven shillings at the International Exhibition, London, in 1872, when it was described as Albanian.
