This brass plaque was a pocket icon, of the kind commonly carried by Russian soldiers. It would originally have been made in two parts, which folded flat when not in use.

Brief description
Cast brass plaque of St Nicholas with Christ and the Virgin, partly enamelled, Russia, 19th century.
Physical description
Enamelled brass plaque with the image of St. Nicholas on the front, with Christ and the Virgin at either side above, and scenes from his life below. The names of the saints are cast in Cyrillic characters on the face of the plaque, and there are faint Cyrillic characters engraved on the frame at either side. There are traces of light blue enamel on the top half of the front, and black on the lower half. The back has a cast pattern of a cross, with flowers in the spaces between the arms.
