This earring comes from Wallachia, in the northern Balkans between Romania and Bulgaria. It was described as typical of Wallachian traditional jewellery when it was acquired, but it could also have come from many other places in central Europe.

It was bought for four shillings (the pair) at the International Exhibition, London, 1872.

Crescent-shaped silver-gilt earring with floral engraving, Wallachia (Romania), 19th century.
Physical description
Silver-gilt hollow crescent-shaped earring with hinged wire. The wide crescent is engraved on one side with flowers, and on the other with scrolls either side of a central empty cartouche.
