Many Italian traditional rings had large gem-set bezels in the 19th century, recalling 18th-century designs. This example, with bright red stones and an engraved flower on the back of the bezel, is typical.

It was bought as part of the Castellani collection of Italian Peasant Jewellery at the International Exhibition, Paris, 1867.

Physical description

Gold ring with a large circular bezel set with a central red stone tightly surrounded by eight white pastes with small garnet-coloured stones between them on the outside rim. There are engraved flowers on the shoulders and the back of the bezel.
