The model of the crucified Christ on the shoulders of this ring shows that it is a Christusring. The Christusring was one of the most popular devotional rings produced by the goldsmiths of Schwäbisch Gmünd. The design was probably introduced in the second half of the 18th century, but this type, with seven coloured pastes on the bezel, is typical of the first half of the 19th century. These rings were mainly made in Schwäbisch Gmünd, as the marks confirm, but they were sold and worn throughout southern Germany.

Physical description

Silver ring set with red pastes. The shank is flat and widens at the front to form the bezel. The bezel is set with a central pear-shaped paste surrounded by four smaller round pastes and two heart-shaped pastes set at right angles to the central paste and extending over the shoulders. The pear-shaped pastes are each supported at the far end by a figure of the crucified Christ on a rayed ground.
