This ring was bought for the Museum, with another ring, for one shilling at the International Exhibition, London, in 1872, as a typical ring from Astorga.
Spanish traditional rings often had religious motifs. They were believed to help protect their owners from the routine dangers of daily life, as well as to signify affinity with the relevant saint. The Maltese cross, which forms the bezel of this ring, was the symbol of several Catholic orders, as well as the Maltese order of the Knights of St John.
