Place of origin |
Silver, the rim and bowl gilded. The bowl of the chalice set in a calyx with an applied, cast frieze of strapwork linked by cast cartouches to alternate heads of women and lions. Below the frieze the applied calyx has been pierced to allow cast cherubs' heads to be applied at intervals, their wings engraved either side of their heads, along with swags and fruit. Below the frieze of cherubs, the surface is engraved with a pattern inspired by contemporary velvet weaves. The stem is of baluster form with applied cherub heads forming a narrow frieze round the widest point. These cherub heads alternate with embossed depictions of bunches of fruit. The rest of the stem is engraved and matted to recall patterns on contemporary velvets; the ornament on the stepped base of the stem includes embossed strapwork cartouches and scrolling foliage on a matted background. The circular foot is separated into eight shaped lobes, embossed with the four Evangelists and four of the Church Doctors.
