Christening gown of fine white linen, with a round neck and wrist-length sleeves, all edged with machine-made lace; the sleeves also have insertions of machine-made lace and wristbands of Irish crochet. The bodice has a plain back, and the front has two panels embroidered with sprays of flowers in white and edged with insertions of machine-made
lace. The long skirt is gathered into a waistband of Irish crochet, with the exception of the centre front, which is pintucked and flat stitched to the waistband. The lower half of the skirt is finished with three horizontal tucks, and alternating bands of floral whitework embroidery, machine-made lace and Irish crochet, with a lace flounce at the hem. The garment fastens at the back of the bodice with two pearlized buttons and stitched buttonholes.

Object history | Worn by the donor's brother, George 'Jinks' Grant-Govan (b.04/11/1914) & his sister Enid Margaret (the donor, b 15/09/1919). Both children were Christened at the church of St Michael & All Angels, Bedford Park, London, where their parents' marriage had taken place. |
