Rings designed as a spray of flowers became popular throughout Western Europe in the second half of the 18th century. They were called giardinetti rings, meaning ‘little garden’. However, this ring was made in the mid-19th century. Italian traditional rings, like many other kinds of traditional jewellery, commonly used 18th-century designs and techniques long after they had gone out of fashion among the urban classes.
It was bought as part of the Castellani collection of Italian Peasant Jewellery at the International Exhibition, Paris, 1867.
