TABLE Cast iron and marble England; 1868 Designed by Alfred Stevens (1817-75) This is one of the few surviving examples of the eighteen tables designed by Alfred Stevens for the old Refreshment Room in the Victoria and Albert Museum (now called the Gamble Room), and made by Henry Hoole and Company of Sheffield, Yorshire. A contemporary critic in the Standard on 17 March 1868 thought 'they have a good effect, but are almost miraculously small; four people, apparently, being expected to dine on a tiny slab scarcely bigger, it would seem, than the seats of any one of the chairs placed around it'.
