Beaker with cover, silver-gilt, Ohlau, Silesia (modern Olawa, South West Poland),1697-1717, mark of Gottfried Kittel.

Cylindrical gilded silver beaker with a lid, embossed and chased with shells and scroll work.

Marks and inscriptions
  • On the underside of the base, zig-zag assay mark and three marks: The monogram 'O L' in an oval-shaped punch with undulating moulding, the assay mark of the town of Ohlau (Silesia) during the 17th and 18th centuries (see Rosenberg, III, no. 4329). A crowned eagle facing right, wings spread, a sceptre in one claw, a Prussian tax-exemption mark used from 1809. The initials 'GK' in a circular punch, mark of Gottfried Kittel (master 1697-1717: see Rosenberg, III, no. 4333). On the outer rim of the lid: zig-zag assay mark and the marks of Gottfried Kittel and the Ohlau town assay office.
  • On the rim of the beaker, in German: German, engraved in upper-case letters around the beaker rim: 'JACOB MARTENS JACOBS SOHN IN HAMBVRG DEN .4. 7BR A[nno] 1708'
    Translation
    'Jacob Martens son of Jacob in Hamburg on the 4th F[ebrua]ry in the year 1708 '
