Copper, gilded, with hexagonal lid and bowl, and a round foot. Set with reverse painted glass plaques depicting Jesus, apostles and saints (four missing), and also with pearls and cut amethysts.

Physical description
Copper, gilded, with hexagonal lid and bowl, and a round foot. Set with reverse painted glass plaques depicting Jesus, apostles and saints (four missing), and also with pearls and cut amethysts.

Marks and inscriptions
The figure in each of the plaques mounted on the lid and the cup is identified by a painted inscription. The figures around the lid are: S[anctus] / PE / TR / VS; [plaque missing]; I C [Ihesus] / XC [Christus]; [plaque missing]; S[anctus] / IOH[ann]ES / BA/ TI/STA; [plaque missing] The figures around the bowl of the container are: S[anctus] BAR/TO/LO/MEV/S; S[anctus] TA / DE / VS; [plaque missing]; PE/TR/V[s]; S[anctus]/ Ioh[ann]es / EVA/ N/GELISTA S[anctus] / IA/CO/BVS

Copper-gilt, set with enamelled and gilt glass plaques; the amethysts and pearl later additions.
Probably Venetian. First half of the 14th century.
A watercolour by Jan Grevembroch, now in the Correr Museum, Venice, shows that in 1760 this ciborium was in Venice. At that date the set of glass plaques was still complete, but the pearls and some of the amethysts had already been attached.
