Chalice and Monstrance

ca. 1600 (made)

Silver, partly gilded. The calyx of the chalice, baluster stem and stepped moulded base, lightly engraved with strapwork. The monstrance fits over the deep lip of the chalice, and consists of an oval glazed container with a cherub for holding the host, flanked by two pairs of columns of a mixed order, resting on a deep band set with jewels in strapwork settings. The columns support a baldacchino with a studded dome flanked by two figures of saints. On the top of the baldacchino is a round turret set with pastes, flanked by two cast figures of saints and surmounted by a figure of the risen Christ.

Object history
Nothing is known of the object's early history. It was acquired by the American collector Walter Leo Hildburgh in Zurich in 1926. He bequeathed it to the Museum and it entered the V&A after he died in 1955.
