Pair of hall chairs of carved mahogany. The backs are rectangular with rounded corners; it has openwork cruciform splats of interlacing bands connecting with uprights. Dip seats. The back legs are straight with small club feet. The openwork front legs have a slightly cabriole form, with scrolled feet connected by a flat openwork stretcher, above a pair of shaped stretchers with a cross-bar.

Physical description
Pair of hall chairs of carved mahogany. The backs are rectangular with rounded corners; it has openwork cruciform splats of interlacing bands connecting with uprights. Dip seats. Hall chair Britain; mid-18th century From Halnaby Hall, Darlington Mahogany; one of a pair The back of this example is similar to designs for drawing room chairs, but the solid seat indicates that it was made for use in a hall. Designs for such looped backs appear in Robert Mainwaring's book The Chair-Maker's Guide (1766), an original edition of which is shown in the nearby desk-case. Bequeathed by Lady C.J.C.
