Physical description
Ladder-back armchair, carved mahogany, with modern top cover in coloured embroidery on linen. The back is composed of curvilinear pierced horizontal rails with circular central carvings. Plain square straight legs with middle and back cross-rails.

Object history
The chair was purchased from Walter Skull & Son Ltd., High Wycombe along with a number of other objects. Formerly on loan to the Geffrye Museum (1920-2006).

Chairs with comparable ladder-back design are illustrated in Cescinsky, Herbert, English Furniture of the Eighteenth Century, 1909 p244, Plates 265-267. They are wrongly described as Chippendale, who did not publish any designs for ladder-back chairs.
