Brief description | Folding, gateleg table, oak, 1700-1725, England (Derbyshire?) |
Physical description | Joined oak gate-leg table on turned triangular base, with an octagonal, folding top of two leaves (25mm thick, with moulded edges) joined by two 'loose' pin iron strap hinges held by nails. One leaf is fixed to the frame with large square pegs. The three legs are turned with four large ovals separated by discs, and are joined by three plain rectangular stretchers. The back legs finish in a triangular base. Along the back, the rail (4-50mm thick) is carved with an undulating S-scroll motif, repeated on the mid-stretcher of the H-shaped gate which links two turned legs. The two short rails (25-30mm thick) have a simple recessed moulding. |
