Brief description | Two-tiered octagonal table, English, 1870-1890, oak |
Physical description | Oak table with eight legs, their lower sections of slender baluster form with turned bands at the feet, at the 'shoulders' of the balusters, and above them. Above this is a square section decorated with three ebony bosses, one above each other. These sections are connected by shallow arches which support a shelf with a moulded edge. Above this the legs have the same baluster form with turned decoration as their lower sections, ending in square sections connected by rails with moulded decoration on their lower edges and a band of reeded decoration in their centres. These support the table top which projects considerably beyond the legs; it is octagonal with a moulded edge and is formed of two plants of oak joined in the centre. |
