Chiffonier
1870-1880 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
The chiffonier rests on four tapering ebonised feet, which support a semi-hexagonal base, veneered as is the whole piece except where stated, with Hungarian ash. At each side are two triangular shelves supported toward the back by ebonised columns fluted and with turned mouldings at top and bottom.
In the centre is a nest of four drawers with incised and ebonised lines. They are secured by a Wellington Chest type hinged flap with a lock. The flap and corresponding pilaster on the other side have panels veneered with harewood surrounded by ebonised stringing and a band of kingwood.
The top supports a small shelf, on two ebonised columns with a backboard semicircular at the sides and rising in the centre above the level of the shelf; this centre is stressed by a circular projection enclosing an ebonised rosette.
