Physical description

Door of wood, lacquered, painted and gilt. Composed of framework enclosing three rectangular panels with raised centres, surrounded by mouldings. The three panels are painted with figure subjects arranged as follows: (1) Small panel at the top: two figures, one kneeling and holding a cup and napkin, the other bearing a bowl of fruit (2) Upright panel in the middle: at the top, two figures reclining under a tree, one about to pour water (or wine) from a bottle; below, three figures, one standing, the others kneeling and holding respectively a tambourine and a book; below, a man seated beside a woman and offering her a cup while another woman kneels at his feet; at the bottom, two figures, one pouring wine from a jar into a bottle, which the other holds. (3) Small panel at the bottom; two figures seated, one pouring water (or wine) as in the upper stage of the middle panel. The panels are surrounded by elaborate borders of interlacing floral sprays on a gilt ground. The back is distempered green.

Object history note

"This door panel came from the Hall of Forty Columns (“Chehel Sotoun”) in the Royal Palace at Isfahan, built during the reign of Shah Abbas I “the Great” (1587-1628)" (V&A Central Inventory, p. 78-9).
