Rectangular casket with round-arched lid; covered with leather, cut in front with floral scrollwork and on the back and sides with a repeating pattern of parallel lines and curves. The lid is similarly decorated with floral ornament and inscriptions in gothic characters, now much worn. With a twisted wrought iron handle on the lid, and a hasp and lock which is pierced with diaper ornament. The casket is strengthened with long iron hinges and angle pieces terminating in shells, and a curved band at each end of the lid pierced with tracery. Lined with crimson leather(?).

Object history
Bought from Emile Peyre for £30 'Wood wormeaten and chipped, leather much worn away and portion of lock missing'; attributed 'German; 15th century'. Assigned to the Furniture Collection.

Formerly in the collection of Emile Peyre (1824-1904), a notable Parisian collector of French medieval and renaissance artefacts. In 1895 the South Kensington Museum (renamed the V&A in 1900), bought over 300 pieces of furniture and woodwork from him, (as well as sculpture and metalwork), at a cost of £11,878. 16s. 9d.
