Object history | Given to the Museum in 1940 by J.H. Burn of Dipton House, Riding Mill, Northumberland. |
Historical context | The arms on this small box are an ornament for a tobacco paper designed and engraved by the artist William Hogarth for John Harrison, who kept a tobacco shop in Bell Yard, Temple Bar. Harrison was famous for singing bawdy Bacchanalian songs and was admitted on that account, every evening, into taverns, where he would also sell his wares. Both Hogarth and Harrison belonged to a social organisation known as the 'Lumber Troop' around the year 1730. |
