Object history | Bought for £10 from a Mr R. Carter of 36 Spring Street, Surrey Gardens (London), 'cracked and many pieces of inlay missing'. In his art referee report (RP/1870/19189, 29 April 1870) Sir M. Digby Wyatt noted 'This is a beautiful specimen, very cheap, and of extraordinarily fine & all[sic] handwork. It is earnestly recommended for purchase.' This may be the Robert Carter, recorded as an 'antique china dealer' at 15-16 The Minories in the City of London, 1870 and as 'antique furniture dealers' at 185 Tottenham Court Road, 1882. (See Mark Westgarth, A Biographical Dictionary of Nineteenth Century Antique & Curiosity Dealers (Regional Furniture vol. XXIII, 2009)) |
