Mahogany library table with carved ornament. Includes a rectangular top with square fitting corners, covered with black leather, with a tooled boarder, nesting on two pedestals connected by a flat arch. The spandrels are carved in relief with scrolled leaves. At the corners of each pedestal a tapering pilaster with carved floral pendent surmounted by a fluted scroll and at the four corners summounted by a lion-mask. Front elevation is composed of eight drawers, on each side, one in the frieze and three in the pedestal.

The drawer fronts are panelled with ribbon and rosette moulding, fitted with ormolu loop handles. The back elevation has one drawer in frieze either side and a cupboard in each pedestal; the doors faced with ribbon and rosette ovals clasped with acanthus leaves. Sides are plain, with ormolu handles.

Given to the V&A by Frederick Howard Reed, in 1953 (see Registered File 53/3610). Mr Reed, who lived at 3 Berkeley House, Hay Hill, Berkeley Square, London, was a considerable collector of English 18th-century furniture.
