This toy turtle has an internal clockwork mechanism. When wound up the toy moves along on two centre wheels, which are connected to the mechanism. Its loosely attached, knob shaped head bobs when the toy is in motion.

Lithographed tin-plate clockwork turtle made in Japan in the 1970s
Physical description
The body of the turtle is lithographed tiplate and the underside is black. The clockwork mechanism is housed inside and the key protrudes on the left side. The turtle is dark green with black, yellow, white, red and light green markings. The head is a ball shape loosely joined to the body inside so it moves when the toy is moving. When wound up the toy will move on two wheels set under the centre area and connected to the mechanism. There is a stablising knob at the back.

References: This collection of toys was acquired by the donor while attending Peking University in 1978 and 1979. The majority of the toys were made in China for its own market.
