A six-folded gilt leather screen with a chinoiserie decoration of birds, floral sprays, flowers and fruit in vases. The four borders have been decorated with smaller compartments with vases and bowls filled with flowers and fruit. Painted in various colours on a black ground. The back is lined with embossed paper imitating seventeenth century gilt leather. The gilded parts have been punched with several different stamps. The punched edging-strips date from about 1870-1910. There are two handles of cast brass.

Object history | Letter from Lt. Colonel C.F. Call, dd. 25th July 1928: 'I have two screens which may be of interest to you; one is a six leaf leather screen (96 inches) painted and gilt with birds and flowering trees in the chinese fashion; came to us sold at Christies some years ago for 135 gs. The other is a 3-leaf (6ft x 2 ft) spanish leather screen said to be of Cordovan leather. My wife and I would present them to the museum if you thought them suitable.'. |
