Ceremonial level and mallet, of carved oak; the level is inlaid with six plaques of painted and gilt porcelain and the mallet has a handle of satinwood.
The level, which is in the form of a triangle with two incurved sides, is carved at the top with two lions' masks and at each side with a human mask, volutes, leaves and other ornament. The upper porcelain plaque, on one side, is painted with an amazon-shaped shield inscribed 'WEDGWOOD BORN 1730', amid floral scrollwork, dolphins and vases; on the other side is a similar plaque inscribed 'WEDGWOOD DIED 1795'. The lower plaques have a cupid terminating in floral scrollwork and holding a vase or other characteristic object; in each is a label inscribed, respectively, 'PALISSEY, WEDGWOOD, DELLA ROBBIA and BÖTTCHER'.
