Walnut caned chair with 'boys with crown' crest, 1685-1690, England
Physical description
Description:
The cresting carved with two recumbent naked boys supporting a crown against a ground of foliage. The back composed of three narrow splats between twist-turned uprights; thetwo outter splats perforated and carved with foliage, framing two panels of cane-work; the uprights surmounted by vase finials. The splayed arms, slightly dipped in the centre and finishing in a scroll, are supported on twist-turned uprights. The seat caned; the seat rails flat and carved with foliage. The legs twist-turned and interrupted half-way down by oblong blocks. The back and front legs joined by an H shaped stretcher. The back legs joined by a mid-height twist-turned stretcher. The joint pegging apparently original. A dark varnish overall.

Modifications and Wear:
Metal bracket underneath front seat rail. The back rail with a crude rail support is thrusting out of the horizontal. Rear left foot severely wormed. The lower mid stretcher with a loss at one end. Back right foot replaced. Front left foot apparently replaced. Both front feet possibly replaced. Front right leg repaired below the seat. The caning presumed to be a replacement. The caned seat bowing considerably.Questionable condition.
