Brief description
Mahogany china cabinet on stand, English, 1880-1900, with 3 bays of Gothic style' tracery pointed arches over three drawers, all raised on 6 legs. The front and sides of the cabinet are glazed and there are two fixed display shelves within.
Physical description
China Cabinet on Stand: Carved mahogany. The cabinet of ‘Gothick’ design composed of three bays each with glazed front filled with tracery , the lower parts of the side bays filled with blind tracery of ‘Early English’ character. The central panel fixed, the side ones opening on hinges. Between each bay, a stepped buttress; the bays are surmounted by ogival arches each terminating in a floral finial, the centre ogee enriched with pierced crockets. The sides are glazed but without glazing bars, the upper part of the framing on each side with pointed arcading. There are two fixed shelves.

The stand is supported on two legs at the back and four in front, each carved with Gothic tracery; between the legs and the stand are open C-scroll brackets. Three drawers, the central one wide and shallow, the side ones deeper and narrower. The fronts of the drawers, as also the frieze at the sides are carved with pointed arcading. Original brass handles of Gothic design. Drawer linings of oak.

The design is evidently influenced by the ‘Director’ although there are no Gothic china cabinets in it.
