Coffer
1450-1500 (made)
Place of origin |
The chest lid is detached (2017), and has traces of green wax and red paint on its underside. The outside of the lid has incised decoration including a deer, apparently a modern addition.
The chest front has two large panels flanking a central tree (below a replacement section of wood where the lockplate was positioned): each depicts ladies and gentlemen in courtly dress against a ground of scrolling foliage with dogs chasing animals. Both sides of the lid, the sides and three interior compartments are decorated with ornamental circles from which issue branches, stems and leaves. On each side is an iron handle. Inisde are three lidded tills of modern manufacture and decoration in the style of the 15th century.
The stand (c1880) with squared baluster legs joined by a X-form stretcher, carved and incised with a floral pattern.
Construction
Dovetailed. The lid with two modern (decorated) battens, but note that the decorated front edge of the lid is probably original.
