Pair of Stockings
1730-1769 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Stockings were essential accessories for everyone in the 1700s. The finest were made of silk, on a knitting frame which produced garments and accessories more quickly than knitting by hand. Developed in the early 1600s, the knitting frame was the first step in the mechanisation of the knitting process. Once knit, the stockings were sewn by hand up the back and hand embroidery created the decoration at the ankles, known as ‘clocks’.
