Hand-knitted two-ply wool
Scottish, Shetland, 1969
Since the late 1960s there has been a revival of the older 'Fair Isle' patterns and colours. These had been in danger of disappearing in a welter of machine-made variations and colours dictated by fashion. Although made of synthetically dyed machine-spun yarn these socks compare favourably with the earlier gloves. They were knitted especially for the Museum by Miss Ena Leslie of Lerwick.
