Textile Fragment

5th Century - 6th Century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Square panel cut from a larger fabric, tapestry woven in purple, yellow, blue-green and red dyed wool, and undyed linen. At the centre of the panel is a roundel containing a dog with its tongue hanging out, on a floral background. This is surrounded by a plain yellow border, then a pearled border, and then another plain yellow border. The pearls have blue-green detailing. This all sits within a square frame, whose corners contain L-shaped borders with a guilloche ornament and a club-shaped floral motif. Between each of the corner panels is a yellow diamond made up of four smaller diamonds. The whole panel is bordered with an arcade pattern. The fragment preserves both selvedges.
