Veil
1800-1805 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Veil of drochel net made in vertical stripes, each 1.5 cms (0.625 inches) wide, and decorated with applied bobbin lace worked in cloth stitch with raised woven edges. The larger motives are decorated with geometric fillings and the drochel net does not extend behind them, not cut away but stopped short of the relevant areas. The top edge is finished with a narrow line of cloth work. The remaining three sides are decorated with a narrow border of a simple coiling floral stem from which a spray of leaves curves upwards. The lower part of the veil is decorated to a depth of 15 inches (38 cms) with a classically-inspired pattern of flower-decked classical urns between taller motifs composed of circles, diamonds and tablets, sprays of feathery leaves, wheat-eats, fruit and flowers. The remainder of the ground is scattered with trefoil sprays of berries.
