Bertha Collar

1890s (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Full bertha collar of mixed bobbin and needle lace, 'Duchesse de Bruxelles'. The main pattern parts are worked in bobbin lace, cloth and half stitch work with cordonnet and raised outlines of bundles of threads and woven lines linked with bars. The cartouches are filled with 'point de gaze' needle lace and decorated with detached petals. The lower scalloped edge is outlined with a curving band filled with small flower heads and punctuated at intervals by large flower heads. From the top of each curve, small floral scrolls extend to the upper edge forming large cartouches in the centre of the lace, and small shield-shape compartments are along the neck edge. The large cartouches are filled with rose sprays.
