Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Carpet. The carpet is a tapestry woven, with between 8.5 and 10 warp threads to the inch. The pattern consists of many coloured stiff weed-like flowers and grasses with waving stems lying across the width of the carpet. Small birds fly or stand among the plants. The plants do not change direction at the border, which is marked only at the ground by a change of colour from blue to red, the join being jagged along the long sides of the carpet and emphasised by a scattering of larger flower heads. Along the edges of the carpet is a narrow cresting in blue. The warp fringe is knotted into lozenges grouped in threes.

Historical context | According to the donor, this carpet came from the province of Oltenia and was made in the School of Arts and Crafts at Breaza. It is priobably more accurate to call this a carpet of Oltenia type, since carpets of different regional types were woven at Breaza, T. 149-1963 being an example. |
