1770s (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Telescopic fan with the leaf doubled with separate leaves for the obverse and reverse sides. Made of impressed paper which has a foliate pattern arranged in diagonal lines with three vignettes left plain to take the watercolour decoration of various flowers, including a carnation, a columbine, a rose, a wild pansy on the obverse and a primrose in the centre. The reverse is roughly painted with three sprays of flowers. The leaf is bound with gilt paper. The sticks and guards are of finely carved and pierced ivory. The guards are backed with gilt paper. The rivet is of brass with mother of pearl washers. The telescopic device can only be operated when the fan is closed then the lower sticks and guards slide into the tops of the guards and the double leaf, thus reducing the length of the fan by half.
