Valance

18th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Valance of applied needle lace and knotting on a ground of silk and linen. The pattern consists of large leaves, depicted in couched knotting, scrolling symmetrically away from a large needle lace motif in the centre. The remainder of the ground is filled with further smaller applied needle lace motifs and knotting. A border is picked out towards the lower edge. The needle lace and knotting are both of silk. The ground appears to be a woven silk and linen mixture. The valance has been edged with beige silk, probably in the 20th century.

Purchased. Registered File number 1980/1220.

The valance is from a set of bed hangings. It has become much darker through the effect of light damage.
