SWEATER Machine-knitted cashmere British: John Ashpool, about 1972 This sweater has dolman sleeves gathered into ribbed cuffs. Both the body and the sleeves, in stocking stitch, were knitted in one piece horizontally from cuff to cuff. The underarms were then seamed and attached to a tight midriff tube of ribbing. The square neck has a ribbed edging. The strong asymmetrical striped pattern recalls designs from the 1920s and the 'trompe l'oeil' buttonhole is reminscent of Elsa Schiaparelli's jersies.
