Gallery label
SKIRT Hand-knitted wool British: Kaffe Fassett, 1970. The style of this skirt foreshadowed the 1970s vogue for ethnic clothes. Shaped like a poncho, it is knitted in three pieces (back, front and waistband) and fringed at the hem-line. It is patterned in multi-coloured stocking stitch. The waist is elasticated. This design was produced for Kaffe Fassett both by hand (by Beatrice Bellini) and machine (by Mildred Boulton). An identical skirt was worn by Raquel Welch (the Observer Colour Supplement, 20 December 1970). Kaffe Fassett, a Californian living in London, taught himself to knit after discovering a seductive, colourful range of yarns on a visit to Scotland. T.306-1985(1985)
