Physical description

Tapestry sample woven in wool on cotton warps. White cotton warp of approximately 10 warp threads to the inch. Wool weft in shades of magenta, purple, blue, green, yellow, white and grey. Pattern of magenta discs on elaborately varied background of colour gradation. Approximately 14 weft threads to the inch. Fringe formed of cut warp threads.

Object history note

Experimental piece woven in preparation for weaving the tapestry 'Over All.' The piece is based on a preliminary study for the tapestry by the designer Harold Cohen.

Labels and date

These sample pieces below represent the weavers' interpretation of the design. The smaller piece was used mainly to test the smallest area of colour which would appear as a round flat colour-disc, and not as a hexagonal pattern of woollen knots. []
