Place of origin

Cover of brocaded silk tissue. With a tabby or gros de tour ground. With a design of loosely curving vertical scrolls mainly carried out in silver gilt thread. At the points and in the curve of the scrolls are diapered panels, and intertwined are the stems of semi-naturalistic flowers in coloured silks. The ground is entirely covered in silver thread with parts reserved to form details of the design. There is a bird reserved in off-white in one space and a leopard or young lion in another. There are two comber, or straight repeats in the width and length. Two loom widths make up the cover and these include a number of fragments. There is a border of gold lace around the cover and a lining of plain green silk. Edged with silver gilt braid.

One white silk weft and a paired shoot of silver filé are continuous throughout the textile. The coloured silks in green, tan, pink, yellow and shades of blue are brocaded and silver gilt frisé is used in making the scrolls. The pattern and brocaded wefts are bound in 3/1 twill by a fine white silk binding warp.
