Chalice veil of fine linen embroidered with red silk in double running, stem, braid and buttonhole stitch.

In its centre is a rayed medallion containing the sacred monogram 'IHS', the cross and the sacred heart. In each corner is a winged angel's head. There is a border of 30 square compartments outlined by narrow bands of geometrical ornament, each filled with an emblem of an instrument of the Passion, there being 9 different motifs in total. The emblems represented are as follows: the Crown of Thorns and the Veil of St. Veronica (Sudarium); sword, halberd, lance, purse and lantern; pillar, handkerchief(?) and the cock; pincers, hammer and 3 nails; cross with sun and moon above; ladder, spear and sponge on reed; 4 scourges; a coat and 3 dice; a tomb, or the Ark of the Covenant.

There are several holes and areas of wear in the centre of the field.

Object history
Purchased by the Museum for £7 7s in 1914 from Mrs. Parker of Uppingham, Rutland. Mrs. Parker claimed it had been obtained by her father some fifty years before from an old lady who had been using it as a duster.
