Historical context | Transformation playing cards made by amateurs were popular in the first half of the 19th century. See Jean Hamilton: Playing Cards in the Victoria & Albert Museum, 1988, p.10, cat 178, p.66, cats. 184, 188, p.67. This series of amateur drawings seems to be related to this pastime. |
