ca. 1846 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Shawl of woven silk, wool and cotton. The shawl is long with a plain centre of white twilled wool and silk. The warp consists of white silk, and the weft is of wool. There is a deep border of thin cones mixed with large scale shawl-flowers and leaf-shapes, from which delicate fern-like leaves and sprays of tiny flowers penetrate the field. No corners are designed and the pattern simply ends at an applied side border, which runs the length of the shawl.
The colours are subdued consisting of maroon, pale pink, mid-blue, a very dark green, a little white and golden yellow. There is a twisted warp fringe and the pattern is bound in 1/3 twill.
