Place of origin |
Shawl brocaded with a white silk and wool ground. With a pattern brocaded in coloured wools at each end. Diagonal stems with floral decoration form compartments containing a cone-like flower. Around the edge and along the sides are cones at intervals of two inches and there is a floral outer border. The colouring is mainly red with touches of blue, yellow and green and the white ground is visible throughout the shawl.
The shawl is woven with a 2/1 twill ground, the warp of silk and the weft of wool. The silk warp gives a slightly speckled effect, especially on the brocaded coloured wefts. The brocaded wefts are bound in 3/1 twill and the floats are cut away on the back of the shawl. There is a warp fringe at each end of about four inches long.
