Shawl
ca. 1843-1846 (made)
Artist/Maker | |
Place of origin |
Long woven shawl. The border, gallery and guard-stripes merge in a design of almost gothic leaf-forms and strapwork fillings, over which pines lie in outline, fairly upright in the border, slanting in the gallery. One pine projects into the lower guard stripe motifs, and one pine is upside down. Powerful finials projecting into the white centre are in the shapes of the 1830s to 1840s and the colours of the 1840s.
There are neat, harlequined end blocks of bright red, black, pale blue, green and yellow, about 0.5 inch x 6 inches each. A ground weft runs across the back of these.
These colours plus a pale lilac-pink, and with a very dark brown in place of black, make up the pattern colours. The yellow pattern weft is silk, all the rest in wool.
The selvedge is in a plain weave with paired warp (green silk) and weft (brown wool) threads.
