Textile Fragment

Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Fragment of a plain woven, undyed linen textile, possibly from a child's tunic, with decoration in dark brown silk counted-thread embroidery. The embroidery consists of an evenly-spaced series of rows of small birds across the textile, in pattern darning, with the birds changing direction each row.

The edge of the fabric was hemmed after being embroidered, with a linen whip stitch. Along the edge of the textile are two embroidered lines.

The fabric is stained across the surface, and most of the embroidered elements have degraded away, leaving holes across the fabric.
