Parasol

19th century (made)
Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Domed-shaped parasol with a brown and white tatted linen cover over two layers of silk taffeta, one of which lines the inner structure. The tiered taffeta layers are pinked in 15 little crescents to each of the 8 segments, creating a floral halo when viewed from the inside. The long ivory handle is carved with three spiraled collars and a domed nose cap. This connects to the cane runner with a metal articulated hinge, allowing the pole to fold in on itself, halving the total length. When in use there is a metal tube around the cane runner that can be pulled down over the joint.
