Artist/Maker
Place of origin

Woman's cloak in cinnamon figured silk damask with an abstract seed pod floral design, probably from Liberty's. Full length and made with a double collar gathered onto a narrow upstanding band. Semi-circular shoulder yolk to which the body of the cloak is attached. At the centre back there is a double box pleat. There are further double box pleats at either side of the front opening while at the shoulders there are additional deep double pleats moving from front to back. The shoulders are supported inside with semi-circular pads made from lining fabric and held with strips of elastic in a lining casing. The cloak is lined with matching silk tussore. It fastens with alternating gold hooks with silk worked metal eyes. Inside the cloak, at the right of the front, there is a band of lining to hold the cloak and there are traces of one on the left. At the neck there is a hanging loop.

Object history
Registered File number 1987/558.

Donor's grandchildren allege from the wardrobe of Lady Clwyd, born Hannah Rushton Sprotson Caine, daughter of MP for Camborne, who married Hon. Mervyn Roberts on 1st August 1893. Roberts was MP for West Denbighshire, 1892-1918, and Baron Clwyd, 1919. (The Queen, 15th August 1893). Possibly from the trousseau.
Historical context
T.80-1963 Cloak made from Thetis (Liberty) silk has a similarity of line. This, however, has 'Liberty' embroidered at the back of the neck. It seems likely that T.32-1987 was made from Liberty fabric and in the aesthetic style but possibly not by Liberty.
