Place of origin |
Orphrey band of red silk embroidered with silver, silver-gilt and coloured threads.
The pattern consists of two vertical arrangements of intertwisted lily stems, the flowers dividing each compartment, forming a series of pointed oval medallions. Within each of these is an angel, each playing a musical instrument, either a lute, a pair of bells, a wooden pipe, a long horn or oliphant, a triangle, a gong, a hurdy-gurdy or a bagpipe. The faces of the angels are executed in chain stitches in parallel rows and their hair is knotting stitches in silk.
The top of the orphrey is roundedr, dipping downward, and its bottom is straight. The whole is bordered by a band of green. It is backed with coarse linen.
